Students of the Fall 2016 Effective Change Agent Capstone decided to embark on two different class projects, card making for incarcerated youth and marketing for the 4th Dimension Recovery Center.
Card making
We hosted a letter writing workshop and created space for folks (beyond our class) to feel welcomed, invited and encouraged to write a letter to those experiencing incarceration.
"Receiving mail while incarcerated helps in a multitude of ways. First, it says someone thought enough about me to send a card. Second, it helps humanize the recipient. Not only for themselves, but to other inmates and guards. The simple act of receiving mail alerts others that this person has value to someone and increases not only their own self worth, but also their own personal safety. Lastly, it keeps them connected to the "outside" world. Institutionalization occurs when the individual has lost its connection to the "real" world and modifies all aspects of their person-hood to exist within the institution often the result of a total disconnect to the anchors of their non-institutional lives (family, friends, community, etc)." -Tony Funchess
Students collected card making materials, brainstormed through positive, inspirational quotes and facilitated a card making event for broader PSU community involvement.

4th dimension outreach
Along with the card making event, students of this capstone illicited interest in other University Studies classes to help market the 4th Dimmension Recovery Center. In small groups, students attended the first ten minutes of classes to share information and hand out pamphlets.
