Communication
Portland State University defines communication as... "Students will enhance their capacity to communicate in various ways—writing, graphics, numeracy, and other visual and oral means—to collaborate effectively with others in group work, and to be competent in appropriate communication technologies."
Communication is the foundation to all we do here at PSU! Communication affects every part of your day from ordering your morning coffee to sitting in this classroom.

Suzan's Story |
Working as an airline agent taught me a lesson about how miscommunication can lead to huge trouble. I used to meet people from different countries, cultures, and different languages these conditions make miscommunication very easily to happen. I was very careful in giving information and taking information from passengers. There was a huge responsibility for me that I should always be careful of what I want to say and how I can make my costumers happy without any stress for me or them. My miscommunication with my boss made me send passengers luggage’s to a different country, not to the final destination, and that huge mistake made my boss spend 6 hours talking with other airlines to fix it. A huge mistake like this can happen in any company easy due to miscommunication and I think so many employees lost their jobs from that situation
Telephone Game
Here is how we ran this activity...
- 6 Volunteers were chosen from the classroom.
- Those 6 volunteers were then told to leave the room and await further instructions.
- Bring the first volunteer back into the room and tell them they need to attempt to memorize what you tell them next.
- Read the very first volunteer the story on the board. Once done immediately cover the story so it's no longer visible.
- That volunteer must listen to the story and try to memorize as much of the story as they can.
- We will then bring in volunteer #2.
- Volunteer #1 will retell the story to volunteer #2 and so on and so forth…
- After each participant has been told the story and re-tell's it to another volunteer, the very last volunteer will retell the story to the class as a whole.
- Then uncover the story on the board and re-read it to with everyone in the room.
This activity helped show how easy miscommunication takes place and why it may be important.
Communication & Self-Defense
What do you think of when you hear "Self-Defense." Many think of the physical techniques one can learn to defend against an attacker. However, self-defense also includes the use of communication skills. The most obvious would be the use of the voice during a confrontation. Shouting can be used to intimidate, call for help, and prevent you from freezing as you are defending yourself. Good communication can also be used prevent fights before they start, such as de-escalating an angry person. Just remember to never tell someone who is mad or upset to “calm down,” it will only do the opposite. During a situation where you are being threatened with a weapon, communicating meekness and compliance can keep wielder from actually using it on you. The opposite is true when you are walking through a sketchy area alone at night. Human predators are just like any other predator in that they target the weak, so the last thing you want is to communicate to everyone around you that you are prey. The easiest way to keep yourself from looking like a target is to walk like you have somewhere you need to be, this can give you a certain air of determination that communicates to predators that you are not prey. It is easy to forget that good communication skills aren’t just beneficial for social interactions; they can even save your life.
Good Communication
Good communication having it in our conversation it results in greater emphasis. It is important to deliver and understand quickly and clearly what we want to do or to know. Communication can happen verbally, Visually, and written and it is very easy we get miscommunication if we are not sure of how to send the information. So active listing skills will help to have an open and useful exchange. Visually we have to understand sings expiration correctly and ask if we did not get the expression so we will not have trouble judging. Written communication is the clearest communication that has less misunderstanding In it and it helps people to go over it again if they did not get the information from the first time. The way that we approach good communication is very important to get what we want and what we want other to know.
Zoë's Story |
My big sister & I are 9 years apart in age. We have always had a weird sister mind reading thing. I have 4 siblings in total but it seems to be the strongest with her. We somehow always know what each other are thinking & feeling. Sometimes we can complete each other's sentences. There is a specific memory I have of when we were younger & she picked me up from elementary school. While I was waiting for her the school bully decided she was going to pick on me. My sister walking up to us could tell just from my body language (& our mind reading of course) that I was uncomfortable. At that age having an older teenager like you was the coolest thing ever. My sister being 17 fit that exact description. My sister walked right up to me & at first completely ignored the other girl. She grabbed my hand & looked at the other girl. She said "c'mon Zoë are you ready to go hangout with OUR friends & go see a rated R movie." The other girl was in total shock of my sudden cool factor. Now of course my sister was just trying too hype me up. I would never be allowed to hangout with her friends or go to a rated R movie. But oh boy did I feel like a bad-ass in the moment. That little girl never picked on me again. Thanks to my sister & I's amazing communication skills the day was saved and so was I.

I had an experience where I was in trouble due to poor communication on my part, but I was able to resolve the situation with the use of good communication. It was during my training as a volunteer at the crisis call center. The atmosphere of the room was rather dour because of the serious subject matter. In an effort to lighten the mood, I made jokes and quips whenever I got the chance as the training progressed. Unfortunately, my new boss was one of the instructors and she took offense to my antics, interpreting them to be a sign of disrespect towards her and the work of the call center. When she told me as much in her office, I immediately apologized and told her that I had nothing but respect for her and everyone at the call center. I explained that I meant no disrespect and that it was because I understood the gravity of the work at the call center that I tried to keep everyone’s morale up through comedy. She could see my sincerity and accepted my apology.

4- The last person supposed to guess what the act was just by seeing the acting.
THE PURPOSE OF THE GAME:
Don't judge someone just based on their face expression, just because you don't know what's going on that person's life.
