What I do:
I am currently volunteering in the math department at Hilhi. I am helping in the Algebra 1 class 3 days a week. Although the school runs on an A B schedule, these students have Algebra 1 on both A and B days. This is the schools attempt to help them pass algebra 1. I spend first and second period with the youth. The schedule usually consists of group warm ups, algebra lessons, and homework either in groups or individually. I go around and check students work, help them with aspects they don’t understand, and answer questions they have. On occasion, I help the teacher with grading, participate in “Friendship Fridays,” help absent students catch up, and help students with their quiz corrections.

Why I started volunteering:
While I was in Child and Family Studies I took a class that required me to complete a 150-hour practicum. Because I was considering going into teaching I thought it would be a good idea to spend that time inside a school where I could observe teachers and practice instructing. I attended Hillsboro High School and still had old coaches who were working there, so I decided to contact one of them and see if I could fulfil my practicum in their classroom. On my first day, some of the other teachers asked if I could help in their classes as well. I ended up spending time in eight different classes. Through the term, I seemed to connect the best with the Algebra 1 class. I was able to help them the most with their agenda which by default lead to me learning more in that classroom. I taught them, they taught me, and we slowly began to develop relationships based off of mutual trust and respect. Although my practicum had been completed, I decided to continue to help in the classroom. It is also fun because my youngest brother still attends the school and it is fun to see him around.

Where I will go from here:
I won’t be able to help out at Hillsboro High School for much longer. I will be moving after this term ends. However, I have grown a greater desire to work with youth. In the next few years I am plan on working as a substitute teacher and youth worker. After I gain more experience I hope that I will find more direction. What this experience has taught me is that I love working with youth and would like to continue to work with them.
