Hollywood Theatre Capstone Project
This project is under construction, estimated end date March 4th.
The Hollywood was founded in 1926 with its first screening being the silent film More Pay-Less Work and has been a keep part of the Hollywood district ever since and is the only Cinerama style theatre in Oregon. The Hollywood theatre is a non-profit organization whose focus is to keep this historic location open as well as educate and connect the community through the art of film.
With Covid ruining just about everything, making films has been hurt by recent events as well. While large companies like Disney or Warner Bros can bounce back from this, smaller indie filmmakers are struggling to tell their stories and the Hollywood Theatre is a resource to help these artists keep working. Providing sponsorships to eligible filmmakers, the Hollywood is working to not only show established films but also to support new films being made from the community. And while Covid currently makes this impossible, the Hollywood has also served as a location for many indie films to be screened, notably in the Hollywood Theatre screening room at the Portland Airport.

Movie Madness is a program run by the Hollywood Theatre that is a classic video rental store like the old Blockbuster Videos, but is a lot more focused on educating and providing access to films that can’t be easily accessed. Containing films from all around the world including foreign films not easily found streaming online, or lesser known indie films, Movie Madness continues the Hollywood Theatre’s mission of educating the community about film. Movie Madness itself is like a mini museum of filmmaking, containing movie props including a replica of the Maltese falcon and creature puppets from Aliens and Gremlins. Unfortunately with Covid you can no longer go into the building, but Movie Madness is still very much around and offering no contact options for accessing films.
The Hollywood Theatre and Movie Madness have long offered classes and educational lectures, some of which I have personally attended and learned from, and despite the limitations Covid has placed upon everyone these opportunities are still offered with Movie Madness University: Online. These online classes are often run by filmmakers and film scholars who offer insights for those wanting to learn more about the art of filmmaking.
