Social Responsibility: I was in the social responsibility group while in this class, and social responsibility is incredibly important to me. To me, social responsibility is the responsibility every member of society has to help those that they can help. It is also every person's responsibility to think about how their choices will affect society as well as the people around them.
Due to the importance that social responsibility holds to me, I felt as though I should volunteer with a vulnerable population. I simply assisted with meal services, and I served or plated hundreds of meals during my time at Blanchet House. Anyone can volunteer, and my experience here has been extraordinarily rewarding. At first, this was just another assignment I had to do for a class. However, I have started to look forward to volunteering, and I enjoy the time spent helping people and will look back on this experience fondly.
My main goal with this volunteer experience was to go a bit beyond the expectations of volunteers; I wanted to talk to the people dining and show them that they are not invisible. Many times, I see people simply walk by homeless people and ignore them as though they aren't even there. I had no specific plan in place, but I went into this experience with the desire to show these people that they are not invisible to everyone and that there are people who want to help. I know how it feels to feel invisible; it is unpleasant to say the least, and I wanted to mitigate this for other people. I was successful in my endeavor. I had conversations with a few regulars, although it is difficult to do this while also trying to serve as many people as possible. That being said, I believe I accomplished my goal of helping people as well as showing them that they are not invisible to everyone.
