Philosophy and mission:
The Human Rights Commission works to eliminate discrimination and bigotry, to strengthen inter-group relationships and to foster greater understanding, inclusion and justice for those who live, work, study, worship, travel and play in the City of Portland. In doing so, the Commission is guided by the principles embodied in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. |

My experience |
My work with the commission has been a great journey. And recently it has been getting more intense due to the protests against use of force, and the prison complex which allows officers to be exempt from the law. Because of this, there is major push for social change here and abroad.
A little history on me; I'm 22, and have been actively engaged for 9 years with organizations like Mercy Corps, Cascade Aids Project, Neighborhood Coalitions, School Boards, NAACP, and started a Union at PSU and other grassroots projects. I've also worked with in Retention Services at PSU the past 4 years. January will mark my 3rd year with the commission, the first year we developed our strategic plan together which set our four pillars: Discovery, Advocacy, Visibility and Education (DAVE). And shortly after we led two city-wide 'Discovery' events called "Roundtables", started an annual ceremony to highlight organizations doing human rights work, we've advocated through multiple press releases, had conversations directly with the Mayor and his staff, and other various things within the community to discover and continue with our mission. This work brings a rush of different emotions. Because while it can be thrilling, to navigate courageous conversations and find the light. Its also heart-wrenching to know people are still homeless, lack security, face discrimination, trafficking / slavery, etc. The commission is a watchdog organization to find human rights abuses, and advise the mayors office based on our connections to the community. There still are things we don't know, I hope you reach out. |
