Earthquake Preparedness
About me
My name is Christi Pingel and I have been enthralled by earthquakes my entire life. After seen the 1989 Loma Prieta, CA and watching the bridges collapse, I knew that I wanted to learn how to prevent this from happening. My journey has taken over 10 years to get to my senior year at PSU. Determining to create a capstone project that can help to prevent death, damage and injury during an earthquake seems like a dream come true.
Oregon and earthquakes
The Pacific Northwest is a tectonically active area. Here there are small earthquakes and megaquakes. The megaquakes don't happen on a regular basis and rarely in a person's lifetime, but they do happen. The chances of having any earthquake over a 4.0 magnitude in your current lifetime are increasing with each passing year that we don't have one.
Do you know what to do if an earthquake happens? Is your house safe? Does your family know what to do? If the answer to any of these is no, then you are not fully prepared.

How prepared is the Portland metro area? Watch the video below to find out.
Documentation
FEMA has many resources for preparedness of any kind. On their website you can have documentation sent to you or download it for free. If you know a place that should have some preparedness documentation, give them some or tell them where to get them.

To Go Bags...bug out bags...readyness kits
Don't forget your ready bag. Have one for adults, kids, and pets. When having an event, have some for giveaways. These can be ordered from Amazon or you can make your own.
The Earthquake experience
Want to experience an earthquake. If you don't have the opportunity to experience a shake truck, there is always OMSI.
Come join me in Forest Grove on August 2nd from about 2 to 6 pm.

Community and you
Your community is your home. Accessing your community in any time of need should be a comfortable feeling and be welcomed from the community members. Emergencies come in many different styles and always need community help. Go out and make your own community.
You can find places in your community to volunteer or even volunteer with the Red Cross. Things as simple as donating blood or clothing can change a life.
As I reflect upon this project, I have discovered how important communication is within a community. In the event of any disaster, each individual is going to either need assistance or give assistance in order to have the community establish itself again. Disasters happen every day and towards the end of this term two major earthquakes happened and killed hundreds to thousands of people. The Pacific Northwest is just as likely to have such earthquakes and yet we are poorly prepared. If I can get through to people and help to save their lives or property, then I have succeeded in my journey. This project will have long lasting affects on myself and hopefully my community. I am hoping that I can extend this beyond my local home community in the near future.
As the CDC said in an attempt to have more people prepared for an emergency...
If you're prepared for the zombie apocalypse, you are prepared for any emergency!

Goals
My goals from this project for the community are:
Create community awareness
Allow community members to create their own subcommunities
Understand their roles in the event of a major earthquake
My personal goals from this project are:
Better understand how I can create (or at least start) change
Learn from the city community outreach department
Attain support from the police department
I am still trying to find sponsorship for a shake truck to come to our event.
