Intown Church (PCA)
A member church of the Presbyterian Church in America, and a "city church", located downtown, Intown's focus is aligned with the PCA by being evangelical, globally and domestically mission-minded, and by having a strong concern for its local community. www.pcanet.org The Portland Rescue Mission--Burnside Shelter (PRM) Founded in 1949, the mission serves both the practical and spiritual unmet needs of those in the greater Portland area. The PRM accomplishes this via weekly public meals, providing clothing and over 75,000 nights of lodging per year. Additionally, recovery programs are a big focus the the PRM. www.portlandrescuemission.org |
a need for service
|
goals & actionsAlready being aligned with Intown prior to this service project, I sought to have an impact by way of helping realize two important, relative needs; helping reorganize & streamline operational functions as well as deliberately securing volunteers for key positions for the remainder of 2016.
With the PRM my service goals were broader but equally significant; serve regularly with the hope of making connections, impacting those I would help serve, and to ideally find a fit for myself with longer-term service in mind. |
REflectionIn the end, the goals established were largely met, however reflecting upon this time of service, the path and the processes involved were the most indelible and valuable portions of this experience. Working through practical and ordinary challenges, various styles of leadership and planning, repeated reminders of how things get done and what's most important, came ringing true: I learned anew to not overlook those being served regardless of obstacles and keep the purpose in mind over the process. And the purpose should be to impact the lives of others in a way that encourages a continuum going forward.
