Why? |
What i doYoung Life Capernaum meets every Tuesday evening during the fall, winter and spring months. We call these weekly meetings club.
Each club there is a group of leaders that lead the activities for that night. Each club is themed so activities and dress match the theme of the club. During club time that runs for about an hour, it is the job of the leaders to engage with the kids and help them with the activities during club. The part of club that I value and enjoy the most is getting to engage with the kids. This is where I think change is happening. By giving these kids your time, you can see them open up and build a trusting relationship. A lot of these kids do not have the opportunity to engage with friends outside of their time at Capernaum and that makes Tuesday nights special. |
CampYoung Life Capernaum camp is where the magic happens. This camp is a week long and is held at Washington Family Ranch in Central Oregon.
We bring around 25 kids with disabilities and do almost all of the same activities that the rest of the camp does. There are about 15 leaders total and we try our best to encourage these kids to push themselves and get out of there comfort zones and participate in these activities. Some of these activities include: zip-line, horseback riding, ropes course, go-karts, and much more. During our time together at camp, this is where we get an opportunity to spend time with each kid and build a relationship with them. This is where a lot of change happens. Giving these kids an opportunity to trust someone and open up to which is something they need. A lot of these kids do not have the opportunity to open up and share their struggles in life and at this camp they get the chance to build a trusting and lasting relationship with somebody who cares about them. This camp is where my life changed. Working with these kids opened my eyes to how much they are capable of and I decided that I wanted to help these kids for a profession, so I began to pursue special education. |
