Africa House services- this work is still in progress (till march 2017)
Since its establishment in 2006, IRCO Africa House has grown to serve more than 5,000 community members from 22 ethnic and cultural backgrounds each year and is staffed by a multicultural team representing 17 ethnicities and speaking 10 languages. We are proud to celebrate 10 years of serving our African communities.
Africa House is the only culturally and linguistically specific one stop center targeting the increasingly diverse and rapidly growing number of African immigrants and refugees living in Oregon. Receiving national attention for moving beyond intercultural strife to be the only center serving Africans from every country in the continent, Africa House is led by an advisory board of cross-cultural community leaders and staffed by a multicultural, multilingual team.
Being a refugee, I am inspired in many ways. The fast-learning system that I was subject to when I first landed in the United States and the knowledge that I needed to get in order to learn the culture differences , and how I see things. I needed to learn different things and meet new people, make new friends. The most important thing was to learn the system in order to know how it works and how I could also be part of the system.
Africa House supports Portland’s growing African refugee and immigrant populations. Located in Northeast Portland, Africa House provides access to a range of services through a one-stop, multilingual, community-based center serving African refugees and immigrants of all ages and their families.

rHere are some of the programs that are at Africa House; Seniors program, Youth program, Parent and child Development Services (PCDS), Anti-Poverty program, and Leadership programs.
Seniors program: this program helps African seniors to socialize among them, exercise and neat. Some make scarfs, hats or blankets. Seniors meet twice a week. Seniors get to go to field trip together and learn their diversity as well. They went o the Oregon Zoo, Rose garden, beach... Youth Program: refugees youth in this program get help with their homework. Each student gets a mentor who works closely with the student to ensure good academic achievement. Students also goes to Africa House every Saturday to get some homework done for the following week. They also participate in field trip as they learn together. PCDS: Parent Child Development Services is a program that focuses to African immigrant and refugees parents and their children from zero to five years old. This is program is more based in parents' home. Home visitors go and interact with parent and children, read to them and play with children, also help parent to keep up with their children's doctors' appointment and immunization. Leadership program: promote African immigrants and refugees in leadership and advocacy. Anti-Poverty Program: founded partly by the County and federal. this program is an open program for rental and energy assistance to every resident of Multnomah county. My responsibility is to inform and empower newly-arrived refugees to be able to access the services by showing them step by step on how they can access the resources- Learning how to read their bills is a big issue to those who do not speak English, also getting to know how and what to bring to the appointment, and to be able to easy access services. Many immigrants and refugees are affected and they do not get the assistance they qualify to because of the lack of information. Getting the right information (the what and how) is a key factor into getting resources. Once the information session is done, these refugees, they get to access the services available to many residents of Multnomah County. |
