Zemyra is a mesh of two character's names: one from my novel - Zekira - and my hubby's novel - Myra. Creative writing is how we met in college, so the name is nostalgic and full of happy.

Reflections of a small business owner
When I was three and half years old, I became a big sister. Obviously, this made me boss, too. I didn't know it then, but both of my parents were entrepreneurs. My Dad was a carpenter and mechanic while my Mom operated a daycare out of the house. The influence must have been powerful, because in the 5th grade, I decided I was going to run my own lemonade stand - with flair.
Oh yes... Dad built me a custom stand and advertising boards. I hired my brother, my bestfriend, and his two younger brothers to work for me. I used my allowance to finance the operation. I paid my mom for supplies and knew what my gross profit was. We worked 2 hours every day after school and I paid them $0.25/hr. every Friday. I had an advertising plan (standing on the side of the road, shouting at cars with our sign + going door to door with an elevator pitch). We had beaded keychains in addition to lemonade, which were more popular. But it was our customer service that sold us. I made "Thank You, Come Again" cards. People were so damn charmed they circled the neighborhood and came through a second time. We stayed in business until my family moved a few months later.
My brother and I transplanted from Gresham to Grants Pass, where we opened our doors again and were just as successful; probably more so as it was summer by then. I loved every aspect of "running a business", however simple, because I decided I could and I did.
My childhood offered me two philosophies that have served me all my life.
1) If I can't find a way, I make one.
2) If you think you can, you're right. If you think you can't, you're right.
Fast Forward 12 years.
In my early college career, I realized my true love was not a practical or sustainable solution to my dreams. Creative Writing could make my heart overflow, but it would do shit for my wallet. So, I started to explore options - marketing, gerontology, nursing, academic advising, publishing, business, sociology, history, psychology, teaching, social work. I must have changed my mind a thousand times. I'd get all revved up for all of a term before I realized none of it was filling the void. I enjoy learning it, don't get me wrong, I'm addicted to school and will be a student for life, but long-term nothing suited me.
I was a wife and soon to be a Mama. I started down a long-forgotten path and spent hours with Google exploring ideas. Who would have thought making soap would hit the spot for me?? FIVE YEARS of trial and error, studying, researching, screwing up, spending money, trying again, figuring it out, getting it right, finishing my business plan, making my first batches, re-realizing the long forgotten joy of pure creative energy that sends me into chaotic, but welcomed oblivion. Oh Yes.
So here I am today. I'm finishing my last year of undergraduate studies. I've put in my two week notice at my beloved job (necessity, not choice), my autistic daughter is my helper, my husband has my back, and you are going to watch me pull an Indiana Jones by taking that daunting first step that requires trust and instinct alone.
It's been a long, dark road. Experience has hammered me into the testament of willpower and ambition I am today. Zemyra Soap is my impact on the world; a reflection of its impact on me. So, close your eyes and hold on tight, because the only road now is ahead of us.
