Providence (school outreach)
Introduction
Welcome to my page! My name is Vivian and I am a general science major on a pre-pharmacy track. I am going to be interning in the School Outreach department at Providence for my class project. I came to this great opportunity by way of my wonderful adviser. I am actually a School Outreach intern myself, so I am working within the very department that hired me. I chose to use this internship as my individual project for this course because this organization's core values are some of the values that I live my life by, so it reflects who I am as a person. I also think their core values are deeply weaved into the four University Studies goals of diversity, critical thinking, social responsibility, and communication.
Shortly after starting my internship, I found a few other aspects of this organization to admire. They value each and every employee and always asks for their feedback. They put a lot of emphasis on self-reflection and always make time at their big meetings to allow for that to take place. I think that is really important because we all lead such busy lives, so it is easy to forget to just take a step back and really think about what we are doing. Self-reflection is very important for our personal growth.
My project does not seem as special as my fellow classmates', but I take a lot of pride in what I do. I strongly believe that anyone can thrive if given the right resources and I get to be that connection for my fellow interns. I want to connect each intern with the right resources that will help guide their academic and professional development.

History
Providence Health & Services continues a tradition of caring that the Sisters of Providence began 160 years ago.
Providence Health & Services continues a tradition of caring that the Sisters of Providence began 160 years ago.
In 1856, Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart and four other Sisters of Providence arrived at Vancouver, in what was then in the Washington Territory, to answer a call for help from a new pioneer community. There were no schools, no established hospitals, and people were struggling to meet basic needs. The sisters responded, always keeping in mind the most poor and vulnerable. Through their courage and determination, they established the first schools, hospitals, orphanages and other institutions of care to serve the new communities.
The sisters incorporated their works of charity in 1859, creating the structure for the current network of health care services known as Providence Health & Services.

Results
So how did my plan play out? Well, my internship actually does not end until two weeks after this course is over so I do not have the final results yet, but I can tell you how things have been going.
Through the intern workshops, all the interns have had numerous chances to get to know one another. We can put names to faces now!
I have also been working tirelessly over the past month to coordinate job shadows for the 27 interns on the team this summer and it has been quite challenging. There are so many interns and I am the only one coordinating everything so it has been overwhelming at times. It is also summer right now so a lot of people are on vacation or they are working from home due to all the road work that is happening around town, so it has been difficult to get my contacts to respond. However, I have managed to get almost all of the interns at least one job shadow in their top areas of interest.
Throughout these challenges, I have found it incredibly useful to be transparent and communicate with everyone. Things are not going as I had hoped, but everyone has been very patient and understanding since I am keeping them updated with what I am doing. I send them weekly updates to let them know where I am in the process and why it is taking longer than expected.

Reflection
Initially, I was not too excited about this internship because I am not interested in the administrative side of healthcare. I came into this position with no prior knowledge or experience, but it did not turn out to be that bad and I have gained a lot from this internship. I have acquired a much broader knowledge and understanding of the administrative side of healthcare and the vast amount of careers that exist in a hospital. I have also had many opportunities to grow and enhance my soft skills. The most rewarding part of this process was that I got to be the bridge between these interns and their possible future careers. I enjoyed getting to know everyone and learning about their career aspirations.
If I got the chance to do this again, I would work more hours. My schedule is packed this summer so I am only able to work two, eight hours shifts each week and I think if I were able to work more hours it would not have gotten so overwhelming because I would have more time to complete tasks.
In two weeks, this internship will end and I get a small break before fall term starts. I am currently applying to pharmacy school and I am set to complete my bachelor's degree within the next school year. I am aiming to attend pharmacy school next fall and then return to Providence for my residency and hopefully stay on as a boarded pharmacist!
