Sandy swim pool swim Coach and marketing diva
I am only 21 but I have been in the swim world since the day I was born. My project that I am doing is helping coach and rebuild the swim program for Sandy High School. Not only am I working closely with high school students but I am also helping run a fundraiser for the swim pool to promote water safety and swimming for all ages.
I hope that by donating my time that it will bring awareness to the community that the pool is in danger of being shut down because it has many expenses that come with it to maintain it and pay the employees. The pool is run by the Oregon Trail School District and although they just raised the city’s taxes to build a new high school with all new sports facilities; they didn’t include the Sandy High School swim team or water polo team. These two programs are Sandy’s strongest sports and have shown it by their 1st place performances in swimming districts and the water polo state tournament.
The Sandy Pool is a place for the community it has events year round to promote water safety, physical fitness, and having fun in the water. The Friends of the Sandy Pool is a group that helps keep this pool alive and running. They do fundraisers and events to promote the pool and many community events. If you would like to you can check them out online for the most up to date schedule you can to that at http://www.friendsofsandypool.org/
We have three fundraisers for the swim team that are going really well. First we had our pennies for the pool this was a fundraiser to raise money for new swim equiptment we ended up raising almost 3 thousand dollars for the pool! Our second fundraiser was the Swim a Thon and this was the chance for the swim team to reach out to the community and get pledges per lap or just a donation. Our final fundraiser is still in progress but we will be having an auction where we auction off some of our senior swimmers to be a slave for a day doing house work, yard work, ect. This is a fun chance to get money for the program for next year and get community members to come to the pool and have a positive experience with members of the swim team. All of this fundraising has been really good because it helps promote the swim pool and let the community know that it is still up and running.
The pool does have a website and there is also a website for the friends of the Sandy Pool but these websites are very rarely updated so I wanted to create something that would be the most up to date information about the pool or any fun facts or events that are going on through out the month or week. The Sandy Swim Pool Facebook provides this and creates a cyber community to share information about the pool and promote the pool by posting pictures or checking in! https://www.facebook.com/sandyswimpool?ref=hl
The swim team was a success everyone on the team improved on their previous times and I was so happy to see the teammates support and cheer for each other. It was such a positive experience to coach these kids because they taught me a lot about what I am capable of and it felt really good to be with such a positive uplifting group of kids. Wrapping up this experience has been so bitter sweet my work at the swim pool would not have been so smooth with out the support and knowledge I got from the effective change capstone. I have loved having my support group in the class room because it made me feel confident going into this swim season that turned out to be such a success.
