About the CHAP
CHAP is a non-profit company which represent art projects for kids and families. They usually connect with other non-profit companies as well. CHAP started 12 years ago by the artist owner "Frank Extanzic," who created the CHAP first in Vancouver and open another company in Portland. CHAP'a aim is to create a useful opportunity for kids and families to be supported in their healing processes for their health conditions. They have contracted with so many hospitals in Portland Oregon, such as Shriner's children hospital, OHSU, Senvensen, Adult oncology, Providence, and Legacy hospital. They provide different activities such as art clubs, birthday parties, open studio, and summer workshops which all of them would attend in the open studio in Southeast of Portland. Thus, there would be similar events in the hospitals as well for those who can't able to attend these events in the open studio. Here for the more information visit the website: https://chappdx.org/

My Duties
I had the great opportunity to provide help for the CHAP members and staffs with their organization such as preparing crafts, art supplies, and art projects for the open studio and hospitals. I completed 30 hours plus the birthday party in CHAP. I was being volunteer in open studio to complete my 30 hours and being part of the birthday party as well. In the open studio, mostly I prepare art projects for the kids and families such as making masks for coloring, making houses, ready the canvases for coloring, and organizing art supplies. Helping the kids and families with the art projects and provide enthusiastic environment are my main role. Sharing the joy with kids and families are important aspects for me as a volunteer because the same energy would reflect to me as well. In the birthday party, I was helping with three different projects such as making necklines, art coloring, and decorating houses. After the group activity, I have to clean the whole area and be sure to return all the art supplies to their spots. Near the closing, I start cleaning all the area and be sure to prepare art supplies for the next following day.

< CHAP'S four Goals>
Diversity and Critical Thinking
CHAP's culture is designed by respecting all the races, colors, genders, religions, ethical and racial classifications, and age. In CHAP I felt comfortable seeing all different age members who were involving there and being respected no matter of their appearance, color, or their ethical perspectives. Felling welcoming in all the genders with different backgrounds would be the important aspects that CHAP provide to represent rightness and gratefulness to people. As a volunteer I was welcomed share my feeling to them and having getting the positive feedback from the staffs and other volunteers as well respectably. Being creative was the great potential in CHAP because most of our art works came from creativity and being able to think about. Asking questions about anything that makes me wonder was the important key to understand the purpose behind all the activities that I was involved and the staffs were so welcoming to answer patiently with interests. I had the freedom of designing and making at coloring for the kids,so at that moment I felt that I was in another beautiful world.
Communication and Social Responsibility
Gratitude was the idea that came to my mind about communication in CHAP. The reason is because giving the power of art to the kids could change their perspectives about themselves considering of their health conditions. Showing the kids that they can be thankful of this organization to provide deep love of art to their hearts and to change their moods in each second as they are struggling with their health problems. I was being thankful that being involved with this organization to provide joy for kids and smile to their faces when they are using their talents and their creativity to create something amazing. Being socially responsible could be important for involving with CHAP because this organization provide benefits for the kids and families to enjoy their each second of their precious lives and being happy and free. I always felt amazing by being connected with this organization and the kids generally to learn how it is important to make a difference in each other's life with providing simple things such as art. Doing the art activities as a group in CHAP would really help our souls powerful and energize which helps to become calm and fresh, so that's why CHAP is very precious for me after experiencing all these aspects.
My Goals
I created small peace of my art work for CHAP like embroidery design because I wanted to provide a great change in the community. I wanted to colorful and spiritual art work to represent, so whenever any parents or kids comes to the studio become happy to see it. It could be useful for advertisement in the events as well which more people would get to know about the lovely CHAP. using it in the action could be another possibility for CHAP as well to represent something different as an art. Teaching lesson of how we can My future plan for summer is to represent henna tattoo in the summer workshops in the open studio which is very new in CHAP. Providing history of henna for the families is a necessary aspect to step up. the reason I plan to do henna is that represent something that I am good at it and I enjoy it, so I want that the kids would enjoy it as well. planing to teach some patterns of henna design for the kids while I would use henna for them. Asking about the allergy possibility could be important as well. |
Reflection
When I started to work in the CHAP, I got the feeling of love, supportive, care, and extremely happiness which made me smile all the time. Helping kids to get the power of art in their spirits and provide joy for them was an amazing experience for me. Seeing the smile in their faces makes me the happiest person because helping kids and families spiritually with the power of art considering with their specific health conditions was the smallest things I could do. It makes me proud to be involved with CHAP and being a volunteer to create a way of joy for these people. being the member of the CHAP which is the most reward-able thing for me to be able to help to provide joy for these kids. I understand that helping myself could be seen through the helping others to gain joy. I would not do differently because I am proud of what I am doing in CHAP because CHAP give me the power to bring happiness to others's heart.
