My project
Hi my name is Regina Navarro-Gomez, and I am currently a senior at Portland State University double majoring in International Studies & Political Science. I wrapped up my 2019 academic year intern with the Portland-AMIGOS Chapter & now will be a Project Supervisor for the organization in Costa Rica. I am passionate about connecting youth to new cross-cultural experiences and sustainable forms of development specifically in Latin America. Merging these two roles will help me serve the participants and communities. Participants will create youth-led community projects that will include water conservation, youth planning sustainability, global & environment & human impact, and trash clean-up, recycling, & composting activities. My goal is to become a strong critical thinker within the context of the community projects participants will be completing.
history of amigos
In 1965, a 29-year old from Houston, Texas, named Guy Bevil, led a team of teens into rural Honduras to fight a growing polio epidemic. Serving communities in remote areas of the country, this group of 181 high school students and 36 adults helped protect thousands of people from the crippling disease and established friendships that crossed borders. This service had a bold impact on the lives of these young people and, as a result, they returned more mature, culturally aware, and inspired to continue serving communities at home and abroad.
