The Fourth Dimension Recovery Center
My Role:
I am a State-Certified Recovery Mentor volunteer with the Fourth Dimension. My role in that capacity it to be a "Peer Mentor" ( a person of support to the client). Being in recovery myself with at least 2 years of consistent sobriety I help motivate clients, who request a mentor, to continue "living in recovery." This means helping them to set personal goals, connect with avaiable communtiy resources, and simply having fun as they actively work in their own recovery.
Impact of This Capstone On My Service:
As a direct result of this class, I was inspired to begin incorporating my talents into my work with clients. In class discussion I heard a story from another class member who told of a comic book project that he did in India. He described being drawn to the idea by his love of art and seeing it as a creative way to help people. The outcome of his project was a brief but very impactful breaking down of the Indian Caste System. This convinced me that I could be having a more meaningful experience with my clients. So I have begun what I hope becomes a recurring program at the 4th Dimension. I started bringing my music recording and production software when I met with clients. It has had a wonderful reaction so far as everyone has been very interested in learning how to make their own music. Even those who are not extremely musically inclined have enjoyed "playing around with" and learning about how to use the software. I believe that this activity has the power to help my clients to express themselves through music, learn new valuable computer skills, as well as act as a fun distraction from the stresses of life and addiction. I have come to develop a deeper conviction through this endeavor that I can really help people with my music.
