PC MOMS
My Story
My name is Josie Ortiz and I am a senior at Portland State University. I am finishing my undergrad in Philosophy Summer 2024. I am pursuing an education in Law and career as an attorney. I am registered to take the LSAT in the Summer of 2024, with aims to get into one of the three Law schools in Oregon State. I am a mother of small children. For my senior capstone, I volunteer for the PC MOMS group. I have experience in doing legal work. I also have experience in working with individuals, specifically children, with various traumas. I chose to support PC MOMS because I wanted to continue to be a support to children and women, and be available for my own children as well.
History
PC MOMS is a support group specifically designed for single women and children. PC MOMS has been an ongoing group since the establishment of its home church; Peoples Church. The church was established in 1952. PC MOMS and its home Church is actively engaged with the local community, organizing outreach programs, charity events, and social initiatives. As its influence expanded, it has became known for its commitment to love, compassion, and service. Today, PC MOMS remains a vibrant community of believers. PC MOMS and the church hosts events, conferences, and outreach initiatives, impacting not only Salem but also reaching beyond its borders.
PC MOMS
This group is organized by PC Church. PC MOMS is a supportive group for women and children. It is ready to serve people and inspire others to serve. MOMS aims to foster growth and understanding. It encourages one another and allows to join one another on our life enhancing journey. The change my community partners and I want to reflect is a harmonious community. PC MOMS reaches other non-profit organizations in order to support them with supplies such as baby items, non-perishable food items, hygiene supplies, and clothing. PC MOMS also provides help to struggling single women with children with services of home cleaning, laundry, transportation, meals, and other requests.
My Experience
I chose to volunteer for PC MOMS because I wanted to continue to support children and be present for my own children at the same time. I chose this organization because I love helping families and it aligns with my beliefs and long term educational and career goals. I enjoyed being apart of PC MOMS. For my hours worked with MOMS, I upheld the following duties:
Uphold Values
Uphold integrity, respect, and ethical behavior while representing the organization.
Childwatch
Children are the most important aspect of volunteer work. Creating and maintaining a safe and friendly environment.
Gathering Essentials
Gathering necessary items that families need, such as clothing, shoes, food, hygiene, and baby supplies.

Reaching out to underrepresented members of our community.
Creating events that targets goals of the organization.
Using different modes of communication to reach out to everyone.

Using different modes of communication to reach out to everyone.
The work we are doing in the community to give generously and to connect to God's local purposes. We pursue our God given purposes by loving families. PC MOMS understands the needs of families and is able to connect them with food, hygiene products, baby necessities, clothes, shoes, transportation, limited financial donations, home cooked meals, and household cleaning duties.
My goals to continue to implement change is by continuing to be active in the group every week. I want to learn from my teammates and grow as a group. I believe spreading awareness about PC MOMS will help more women and their families. I want there to be awareness that single women do not have to struggle alone and that we are here to help and provide needed support.

Reflection
This experience has allowed me to learn and grow. I developed a sense of purpose and feeling connected to other community members. Doing this work has brought joy to me by building relationships and helping others. It felt good to be able to help support others while being present for my children, and having them involved as well. This experience allowed for my family to grow together and experience what it is to help assist others.
