Parental cannabis use, negative parenting, and behavioral symptoms in preschool aged children
Meet the researchers
Personal Introduction Paragraph
Hello my name is Dalton Wesemann and I am in my senior year at Portland State University where I study Community Health Promotion and Urban & Public Affairs. I am a BUILD EXITO Scholar that got the opportunity to work at Oregon Health & Science University in the clinical psychology department under Dr. Andrew Riley. The research that I am doing at OHSU involves parental cannabis use research, pediatric intensive care unit, and cancer youth survivorship research.
OHSU MISSION & VALUES
As part of its multifaceted public mission, OHSU strives for excellence in education, research and scholarship, clinical practice and community service. Through its dynamic interdisciplinary environment, OHSU stimulates the spirit of inquiry, initiative and cooperation among students, faculty and staff.

Social Context
The social context around our work focuses on 1.5-5 year old age range of children who have parents that use cannabis. Some other areas that we will be focusing on are demographics (race/ethnicity, education, income), cannabis use (last 6 months), and completed validated measures of negative parenting practices, parental internalizing symptoms, parental adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and child behavioral problems. It's important that we do this work to fill gaps in knowledge and be able to educate child bearing age users of cannabis on the potential harmful effects.
WHY I do this work
I do this work because of my lived experience growing up in poverty and the situations that I have gone through have made me aware of the issues that face at risk youth and children in their environments. As someone that is interested in policy I thought doing this research is going to put me into a place where I have a better understanding of the issues pertaining to at risk children and youth.
My duties & Responsibilities
- Working with a NIH-funded research team on grants related to the impact of cannabis use on parenting styles and child behaviors, predictors of physical activity among adolescent cancer survivors, parenting and the prevention of pain in the PICU
- Conduct quantitative data analysis, including regression, ANOVA, and mediation analysis
- Write and submit conference paper abstracts (first author), co-author peer-reviewed manuscripts, and Literature reviews.
- Use a range of research software, including SPSS for quantitative analysis and Epic/Redcap for survey design and data collection
- Enroll patients/participants into research studies following IRB-approved informed consent protocols
- Certified in human subjects research ethics, HIPAA data regulations, Conflicts of interest and commitment, etc.
My Goals/UNST
www.pdx.edu/university-studies/program-learning-goals
At Oregon Health & Science University there are many departments and thousands of people working on problems that need to be addressed. Not just problems that affect people in Oregon but people around the world. OHSU is one of the biggest public health focused public universities in the nation that educated many students on the needs that particular groups have. They educate them in a way that allows them to go out into communities to do the best work that they can. I say this because my goal is to be one of those people that address the issues that people are facing in their communities by using communication, critical thinking, ethics, inquiry, diversity, equity, social justice. The UNST goals not just informed the work that I have done in academia but they are going to inform the rest of my life as an agent of change. |
Special Plans to ACHIEVE goals
My special plan to achieve these goals is by continuing educating myself on topics that are challenging to my perspective and understanding. Learning from people who have more knowledge than me and want to help me learn. I plan to use my network abilities to get the help I need to make sure I am being truthful to my goals that are laid out above.
Sample work
Once Sample work is approved by Principal Investigator I will be able to display the sample work here.
Reflection
My reflection of this work can not yet be completed because this work is still being done and has not reached its final product yet. I will edit this when it has been submitted to a conference or journal. This paper has came a long way from when I first started working in the lab and as the first paper I worked on as an undergrad research assistant it means a lot to me and i'm glad that I will be able to continue doing research such as this that will have an impact.
