Welcome to my senior capstone page
My name is Hannah and I am a fourth year student at Portland State majoring in Public Health Administration of pre-chiropractic and minor in Child, Youth, and Family Studies. I am hoping to achieve a career goals of working as a healthcare provider and within healthcare management. For my senior capstone project, I've had the opportunity to work with a nonprofit organization called White Lotus Foundation. The reason that I join this non-profit organization is to strives the support and empower the youth to change the view of our society on the API community. I am passionate about working with young children as it's an opportunity to watch children grow and develop into confident and self-sufficient learners. I want to be able to extend my knowledge and skills to imitate the role models that could create a positive impact on the younger generations to create a change in our society.

MISSION STATEMENT: To support and empower individuals in the Asian and Pacific-Islander (API) community.
OBJECTIVES
The objective is to cultivate tradition and performing art through entertainment that every generation can enjoy. The Lion Dance Team provides exciting performances throughout the Pacific Northwest for Chinese New Years, weddings, grand opening ceremonies, corporate events, banquets, and more. |
GOALS
The organization is striving towards on creating different ways to spread the culture by creating different projects and volunteer opportunities for the youth to expand on resources to build justice and non-discrimination society. It is important to maintain the cultural preservation of many traditions and bring on the culture within the community. |
HISTORY OF WHITE LOTUS
The base of the foundation is White Lotus Lion Dance Team which covers the aspect of cultural performing arts of traditional lion dance as part of the spiritual and cultural Asian traditions. White Lotus first came together as a group of inspirational young individuals that wanted a way to not only spread cultural awareness but to make every celebration unforgettable. Lion dance is traditionally a cultural performance that was popular in many East Asian countries. It has been around for millennia and was traditionally used to scare away evil spirits and bring joy and good fortune. Today, it remains as a fun and entertaining performing art and sport yet still holds true to tradition and culture for generations past.

Communication: Students will enhance their capacity to communicate in various ways in writing, graphics, numeracy, and other visual and oral means to collaborate effectively with others in group work, and to be competent in appropriate communication technologies.
Inquiry and Critical Thinking: Students will learn various modes of inquiry through interdisciplinary curriculum like problem posing, investigating, conceptualizing in order to become active, self-motivated, and empowered learners.
Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice: Students will explore and analyze identity, power relationships, and social justice in historical contexts and contemporary settings from multiple perspectives.
Ethics, Agency, & Community: Students will examine values, theories, and practices that inform their actions and reflect on how personal choices and group decisions impact local and global communities.

Communications: It is difficult to maintain a positive relationship without effective communication. In order to establish more successful interactions with the youth, effective communication is a way to recognize and understand their point of view. With great communication skills, children may find it easier to make friends, connect with their peers, maintain a positive relationship within the community and resolve conflicts. Communication is the most important skills within various areas, effective communication is essential in children development that involve listening and voicing information in a way to make them feel important and valued.
Inquiry and Critical Thinking: Critical thinking and inquiry involve analyzing and questioning to drive deeper into topic or text. The value of critical thinking emphasizes observation and inquiry to argue and reflect on analyzing information that help in making better judgement and decision. Among children, attaining inquiry process the ability to develop critical thinking by develop question in investigating in collecting and analyzing information to report their findings. In an example, we tend to discuss ideas within meetings and have the youth develop questions and come up with their own ideas in creating their own opportunities to give back within the community. We are there as a way of support and provide resources for them to make it happen.
Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice: A culture of equity and social justice in honoring the value and purpose of providing an opportunities to share and celebrate the cultural heritage to ensure that all people have fair and equitable support to learn, grow, and advance in our society. By creating a culture of equity and social justice provide the youth to gain an advantage in recognize and being able to appreciate a diverse society that contains bias free.
Ethics, Agency, & Community: Ethical behaviors can lead to a more effective program as a community intervention that might lead to finding community support and funding possibilities. Community connections give the youth a sense of belonging and help them develop social and other skills that might thrive them into follow the interest in giving back within the community.
