Senior CApstone: being and effective change agent
King School School Museum of Contemporary Art
As part of my Senior Capstone, I am required to volunteer at an outside organization. I chose the King School Museum of Contemporary Art (KSMoCA). KSMoCA is a public contemporary art museum inside a Prek-5th grade elementary school, in Portland, Oregon. KSMoCA works collaboratively with Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary to provide art education and experience in the professional roles of an art museum. I chose KSMoCA because, having been through programs that taught and provided leadership opportunities, I see the potential for developing leaders, the program has to offer.
What have I been doing?
During my time at KSMOCA this term, I have been helping a few students design and build models for a new KSMoCA building, dedicated to the art museum.
We started by talking about what makes a city. Some of the answers we received are grocery stores, transit such as highways and roads, and schools.
Next, each one of us began drawing an Arial map of Martin Luther King jr. elementary school and the property it sits on. Then we drew in the the new museum where we thought it would look good. each student had a different design at first, then as we continued we all started finding inspiration from each other's design and began incorporating bits and pieces to our own design.
After we drew our designs, we moved to making models. We tried using Popsicle sticks at first, then we switched to paper, which was easier to build to scale.
Currently we are working to make those paper models in to a more sturdy model using foam core. The teacher is making the landscape for the foam core model to sit on.
Once the models are finished, the will be shown during Design Week in Portland.
