The PSU Orchestra
My name is Lynn Bauscher and I am currently finishing a Bachelor's of Music degree in Performance at Portland State University. For the past year I have had the opportunity to be the manager for the PSU Orchestra under the direction of Ken Selden. Through my capstone class, I have continued my work with the orchestra and have helped create more organization while developing new ways to bring in a more diverse audience to each performance.
ABout the Orchestra
Each year, the PSU Orchestra presents a series of concerts throughout the Portland area. Recent highlights include: music of Mahler and Frank Zappa, at the Crystal Ballroom; an evening of opera arias with Pink Martini singer China Forbes; and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the PSU Choirs. In addition to its own concert schedule, the PSU Orchestra performs annually with The Portland Ballet and the PSU Opera Theatre. This year, the orchestra performed Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night’s Dream with The Portland Ballet. In addition, the orchestra performed at the Mission Theater performing film scores that included: Phantom Menace, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings. The orchestra also included music of Mozart, Dvorak and Bernstein at this wonderful venue. During the spring, the orchestra performed with the PSU Opera Theatre in the production of Mozart's La finta giardiniera. The orchestra will be ending their 2018/19 concert season with Dvorak's Slavonic Dance No. 4 and Beethoven's Triple concerto, featuring The Florestan Trio.
My Work: As the manager of the PSU Orchestra, my goal is to help make the orchestra member's and the director's lives as stress free as possible in order for them to focus on performing wonderful music. This includes distributing music to all the musicians in a timely manner so they may practice and prepare their parts. I maintain the orchestra rehearsal schedule and ensure all performers are aware of any changes. I am responsible for tracking musician attendance and absences due to illness or other conflicts. I assist in locating new and/or substitute musicians to fill orchestra vacancies. In order to reach a broader audience, I coordinate and assisted with outreach through the use of print advertising and social media. Serving as the PSU Orchestra manager, provides a wealth of learning opportunities. These opportunities allow me to gain additional experience which supports my career aspirations in Performing Arts Administration.
