Canby Transgender Alliance
Senior Capstone Spring 2021
My name is Sarah, and I've been volunteering with the Canby Transgender Alliance (CTA) since its inception in April, 2019. In order to tell you how I began working with CTA, I must tell you that it was along a personal journey of confronting my biases and challenging the normative thinking that I had been taught since my childhood. I still have to confront my biases on many issues- that part never ends.
The CTA was created to find community among Canby's Trans and non-binary folks (see story in the flyer below), and has partnered with several trans, LGBTQ+ and community groups to create a more welcoming and affirming community. It was within these partnerships that Zoar Lutheran Church in Canby reached out to us to help resolve the issue of not having space for our local clothing closet. They graciously provided a safe and welcoming space, volunteers and support for the closet to be a success. My project for this term is to complete the move to the new location, help set up the new closet and collaborate with other organizations to advocate and provide support for the rural trans community members and to offer community education.
My work will not cease at the end of the term. This is a new beginning for CTA-I will continue to serve and I am so excited to watch how we grow!!

The need is great in rural communities- so we are reaching out to connect with the trans community in more rural areas. |
