About Me: Hello everyone, welcome. My name is Alejandra Mendez. I am a senior at Portland State University. I will be graduating this Spring with a BA in Psychology. I am minoring in Child and Family studies. I am excited to be able to work and focus on making change. My passion revolves around children and families. I am a mom which has shifted my perspective and made me view life through a new lens. I am a family and friend oriented person. On the left is a picture of my son, Noe, and I. Below you will find information on my work with my community partner through my senior capstone. |
Canby Pregnancy Center |
The Canby Pregnancy center is about helping families providing services ranging from ultrasounds, clothing, & food. Information is one of the primary keys to the success of this organization as knowledge is power. Incentives such as "baby bucks" to use on resources in their boutique inside are used in exchange for educational lessons. An inclusive community ready to serve.

My work with the Pregnancy center is ongoing as I myself use it as a resource. The team there make you feel welcome and love getting to know you. Events occur throughout the year to help with funding as this place is run because of donations. Donations could include money as well as resources like clothing, shoes, diapers, wipes, food, toys, and so on.
There work they do is a shared passion of mine as it takes a village to raise a child. Being able to provide the essentials for the development of a healthy child is everything.

REFLECTION: This work matters to me because I myself am a parent. As a parent I realize that there is much to offer a child like warmth, discipline, and meeting their physical and emotional needs. The pregnancy center is a great resource if you are lost or in need of support. Being a parent means there is constant learning from both the end of a child and the parent. The pregnancy center teaches essential skills to parents while nurturing the physical demands of need. I believe nobody should be neglected of food, water, shelter, clothing, and a bathroom which the pregnancy center offers. Most importantly, love pushes us forward. I am beyond grateful that such resources are available because everyone deserves to be at the starting line.
