Disclaimer: This page is a capstone requirement for Portland State University. For further information on The League of Minority Voters, please visit their website at minority voters.org.
My name is Gemini Carman. This page is a reflection of my work with The League of Minority Voter and the organization of a hunger campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to address the issue of food insecurity that hinder our underprivileged communities in Oregon. Working closing with LMV founder Promise King, we are going to work towards solutions to combat food insecurity with our communities. As we are in the mist of a health crisis, it has elevated the rate of food insecurity within our underserved communities.
What does food insecurity look like?
Food insecurity is when one has trouble accessing/affording food for themselves for families. This can be temporary, or long term as each situation is can be unique to the one affected.
What are some of the outcome goals?
Some of our goals that we are working to achieve are: To have food acccessible for anyone in Oregon who is in need of assistance. For people to have the ability to access food that is accommodating to different religious practices. To have the process of receiving food assistance to be quick and easy.
What communities are impacted by food insecurity?
Oregons marginalized communities are the most impacted by food insecurity. While living through a global pandemic, Covid-19 safety restriction has hindered our underserved communities the most. The majority of Oregon's BIPOC communities work essential jobs and don't have the privilege to take their work home.
What are the externalities of food insecurity?
These forms of coping with food insecurity are typically seen as people choosing cheaper options for food that that typically lack nutritional requirements. These types of food are usually high is sodium/sugars and heavily processed. This can be correlated with increased risk of diabetes, obesity, and poor mental health.
Calls to action:
One of the courts of action is the mail Oregons State represenatives addressing the issue of food insecurity that the ones that are impacted the most. Also reach out to potential community partners and stakeholders to support. These community partners and stakeholders will be invited to a summit to bring arrestees on the problem of hunger in Oregon and work together to come up with solutions to serve all.
