I am a senior at Portland State University in the Effective Change Capstone class. My major is sociology, and I spend a lot of time thinking about all the different ways we as individuals can effect change for the betterment of our communities.

ENGAGING IN SOCIAL CHANGE, ONE FRIEND AT A TIME.
Postcards To Voters is a group of dedicated volunteers who are committed to increasing Democratic turnout in close elections throughout the country. A 2007 study showed that handwritten notes are three times as effective as machine printed ones-and that has fueled this movement.
Postcards to Voters began in November 2017 and by November of 2018 it has blossomed to approximately 40,000 volunteers and about 3 millions postcards have been mailed!
Groups of friends and strangers have gathered across the country to educate themselves about different elections in different areas. They also have had a blast creating their own postcards out of reuse materials, decorating them, and fundraising for postage!

In 2016, when the 45th President was elected, a dear friend of mine catapulted into action. Never having been one to be overly political, and having been friends for 15 years, I also jumped at the opportunity to ride this new wave of motivation alongside her. That led us to Postcards to Voters-a grassroots movement people can do from home, alone, with friends, or with people they'd never met before.
Even when writing these postcards in solitude, I gain great satisfaction considering what is happening across the country. There are thousands of volunteers-just like me!- who take time out of their busy lives, pay out of pocket for postage, and try and encourage others to engage in their local political processes. The hope for change, the sheer potential of hundreds of thousands of people being influenced to galvanize a movement across countries, states, and the country is incredibly inspiring-and it keeps me going, staying involved and curious about the future of this country and the lay of the political landscape.
