Welcome! You are entering the blueprint layout for an experimental critical thinking workshop, a workshop that took place in Spring, 2019. Generated as a capstone project, four students at Portland State University were self-selected to create this workshop for the subject they are deeply invested in. We--Lady J, Alec Chapa, Brian Romo and Claire Gilchrist--invite you to explore our approach to teaching and exploring critical thinking itself, as well as the conditions that make it possible. What you will see below mirrors the format and order of the Spring workshop. Our approach in structuring this workshop is intentional and a result of our group's synergy in collaboration.
Workshop Overview
»
Claire narrated the process one undergoes in centering, tuning into our individual emotional state, and focusing on the present moment. Each participant followed Claire's guidance, which gave everyone space to mentally prepare to expand their concept of critical thinking.
|
»
Together, Lady J and Alec led an extensive co-lecture introducing the emotional and rational dynamics of critical thinking. They presented traditional tools for analytical reasoning, situating them within the context of relationships and collaboration generally.
|
»
Facilitating a space to practice critical thinking, Brian presented a fun, interactive game based on a hypothetical scenario. Each participant had a chance to critically assess a list of items then come together as a group and contribute their reasoning to form a consensus.
|
»
As with the guided meditation, Claire brought the workshop to a close by leading the class through an individual journaling session. This gave each participant the space to reflect and distill their insights from the entire workshop. Claire led each section with evocative questions.
