Breathing/Swallowing Coordination
About Us
Breathing-swallowing coordination and the ability to cough are quintessential pulmonary defenses. People who do not capability to swallow (dysphagia) and/or cough is linked with respiratory compromise. Dysphagia is familiar in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (PALS). In PALS, both cough and BSC may become impaired due to progressive involvement of the respiratory and/or bulbar (speech & swallowing) musculature. This project examines associations between BSC and cough-related airflow measures and risk of aspiration in individuals with ALS.

Why I got involved (Narrative) I I got involved because I wanted to see the research side of speech pathology. I got the hands on experience by writing making education plans, learned rehabilitation techniques and writing peoples speech by phonemes. I had yet to see people's actual breathing on a chart both aspiration and inspiration (breathing in and out) and the way vocal folds open and close. It was great learning from a professor that has taught me so much. I hope that I can use this new understanding and knowledge and use it for good and effective change.
