Spring 2016 Class Project
The Spring 2016 class chose to support two different projects; MAPS: Alder and Portland State and Free Geek
MAPS Program Mission:
To provide a group mentor-based structure for Portland State University student volunteer mentors and Alder Elementary School Dreamer students to create positive emotional connections, foster reciprocal learning opportunities, and reinforce the connection between higher education and career achievement through engaging mentor sessions at Alder Elementary School. Project: Organized and facilitated four twenty minute sessions of yoga for 100 kindergartners. |
"Thank you SO MUCH for volunteering yesterday at the PSU-Alder College Day visit! The kindergartners had such a wonderful time thanks to your presence and hard work helping out with activities, prepping each rotation station, and engaging in conversations / connecting with the students as they explored Portland State!
The Alder teachers and chaperones had nothing but nice things to say about all of the college students and staff who spent the morning with the kindergarten classes. Having such a large and wonderful group of college students sharing this special day with the kinders really made the difference for the participants... Their experiences while on campus will stick with them for years to come! Again, thank YOU so much for taking time out of your busy end-of-spring quarter to join us yesterday." -Zac Walker, Mentoring and Service Graduate Intern. Free Geek Mission:
Free Geek’s mission is to recycle technology and provide access to computers, the Internet, education, and job skills in exchange for community service.
"It’s a mission that’s worked for us through the many changes since our founding in February 2000. Believing firmly that reuse is the highest and best form of recycling, Free Geek has earned a reputation as a respected leader in the field of digital inclusion, resource management, and environmental integrity. We are poised to tackle the most important challenges impacting technology reuse and recycling." http://www.freegeek.org/ed-search.html
Project:
Spent a Saturday afternoon volunteering in the Build Program. We started by learning hardware identification, the components of a computer, system evaluation, and how to test the basic functions of a computer. We then went on to identity system assembly and quality control.
