Generational Cultural Wealth
Generational wealth is something that most parents hope to pass down to their children. But what is there to pass down when one has no wealth? A topic not so often discussed or seen as wealth are cultural funds of knowledge. Funds of knowledge are skills passed down through generations. These skills are often not seen as valid, however they are crucial aspects that have helped our ancestors evolve.
Throughout this experience, I have had the opportunity to make a handmade crochet cobija for my daughter and also share a few recipes that have been passed down through generations.
Crocheting is a form of knowledge that was passed down from my grandmother. I remember having to stay home from school when I was sick. Even though I was sick, I still had to learn something; whether it was cooking, cleaning, sewing, or even learning how to crochet.

Crocheting for Beginners
One might feel a little anxious when hearing the term crochet, but it gets easier once you get past the foundation (the first chain). A blanket like this one above can be done by simply using your fingers or using a crochet hook. The hook used in the making of this blanket was a 15mm crochet hook. YouTube also serves as a wonderful source for helping you get started on the crocheting project of your choice!

Minamalist RecipesI was raised by a beautiful single mother who worked two jobs and at times we barely had enough to eat. I always remember eating the best food with whatever ingredients she could find in the pantry. El libro de cocina minimalista is a book I have created for my daughter to use as a reference if she ever finds herself facing food scarcity.

Bilingualism
Who is to say that robbing a people of its language is less violent than war?” - Ray Gwyn Smith
Language is another form of knowledge that can be passed down as a form of generational - cultural wealth
Bilingual experiences have proven to improve cognitive abilities such as problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity. Canticos provides children, of both bilingual and monolingual households, nursery rhymes in both the English and Spanish language to assist bilingualism.

About meMy name is Jennifer Selena Sandoval, I am currently a homemaker and studying Social Science at Portland State University. My mother has raised me to be an advocate for myself and others who have trouble advocating for themselves. Although I did not have the opportunity to work with my organization of choice during this term due to the pandemic and unprecedented circumstances; I am happy to use this opportunity to create resources of cultural knowledge for my daughter.
