Volunteer at Clayton mohr commons
Welcome to my Weebly page!
My name is Taylor Browning, and I am currently a senior at Portland State University. I am majoring in Psychology with ambitions to go to graduate school to receive my Masters of Social Work (MSW). Currently, I am taking the Effective Change Agent Senior Capstone course for Winter of 2020. For this capstone project, I am currently volunteering at Clayton Mohr Commons, which is a 24 unit fully subsidized housing project that provides housing for chronically homeless and low income military veterans in Oregon City, Oregon.
History of clayton mohr commons
Clayton Mohr Commons is a project that is operated by a nonprofit named Do Good Multnomah. Do Good Multnomah is a non-profit that partners with the community to provide permanent supporting housing and low-barrier emergency shelter to houseless Veterans in Portland. They pride themselves on relationship building with individuals staying in their facilities and also support one-on-one engagement, supportive services, and community participation to ensure that their residents receive the best experience and treatment as possible. Do Good Multnomah has many other homeless shelters and permanent housing facilities around the Portland Metro area. Clayton Mohr Commons was opened in November 2019 and is named after Clayton Mohr, who is a military Veteran who is extremely active in the Veteran community within Clackamas County. This project cost $7 million total to complete and was funded through many different sources including:
- Veteran's General Housing Account Program (GHAP) from OHCS
- Clackamas County HOME and CDBG funds
- Federal Home Loan Bank grant
- Meyer Memorial Trust grant
- and cash-flow dependent private financing
do good multnomah's mission:
Do Good Multnomah supports Veteran-centered communities that inspire dignity, sustainability, and purpose.

- Make a huge difference in these Veteran's lives through providing friendship, emotional support, and helping them with whatever they need help with.
- Make a difference in the community that these Veterans are apart of and be able to offer them something they previously did not have.
- Gain hands on experience in the field of social work by helping the residents with their cases and other issues that they may face.
my volunteer work
My volunteer work with Clayton Mohr Commons has consisted of three major categories of experience. These three categories are:
- Setting up a BottleDrop Give account for Clayton Mohr Commons, where residents will be able to use the funds donated to this account for many different things such as laundry, toiletries, food, etc.
- Helping residents with case management.
- Facilitating a military stories group where the Veterans can discuss their time in the service.
Reflection
Through volunteering at Clayton Mohr Commons, I have learned so much about myself and about the career of case management. This experience was very eye opening and it was extremely rewarding to be able to help residents with their cases while simply being a friend or a peer that they could connect with. This experience has sparked a newfound love and interest in social work, particularly working with homeless Veterans. My goal is that I can continue working either at Clayton Mohr Commons as a case manager or continue working with Do Good Multnomah at one of their other shelters. The experience that I have gained through taking this course is one that I will never take for granted, and it was an absolutely incredible experience getting to volunteer at Clayton Mohr Commons.
